Wednesday, January 31, 2018.

Today is Damath Competition.
It is like a chess. But using the principle of operation on integers. The winner is the one who got the highest score. The winners in the previous round will be competed again to get the real winner.

Damath Competition.

Damath Competition.

The poins is recorded on the sheet.

I show my draft of lesson plan to my cooperating teacher.
She gives me some suggestion about the lesson plan.
Tomorrow I will start to teach about this topic. So this night I prepare for the activity for students.

I use the Mathematics book that my CT given to me. The book is written in English. Because English is the second language in Philippines. Students and teachers always using english during the learning and teaching process.

Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

Today is MATHIRA MATHIBAY.
MATHira MATHibay, means "the last man standing".
In this competition the participants work individually. Each section can send as many participants as possible. The illustration board, a board marker or chalk are needed for this. There are easy, moderate and difficult round. Each category has 10 rounds of questions. The questions display on the screen. The participants have to write the answer on the board. When times up, they should raise the board and show the answer. It is like “ranking satu” in Indonesia. The one who has wrong answer has to go out of the arena. For any questions given there are participants who failed. The final is when we got participants compete one on one.
Photos of Mathira mathibay.

On my observation in classes, my CT still discusses about the last topic, Inequality of one Triangle. She gives a review and an exercise to the students. For Acacia students, they just do the activity today.

Start from today is a Math Celebration Week. All of Math teachers will be very busy. And we also, Math student teachers. We are volunteers of this event. This event always held every year in Sta. Elena High School. There are different competitions each day in a week. Students from grade 7 to 12 are able join the competitions.

Today is Math Quiz Bee. A section can send one group with 3 members. They compete according to their grade level. Teacher will read the questions, and they will write the answer on a little paper given. They have 15 seconds only to answer each questions.

Math Qiuz Bee.

Math Quiz Bee

It takes place on a normal day. Students from afternoon sections join the competition in the morning. And students from morning sections join it in the afternoon.

At 2 p.m. I have class for observation. My CT (Cooperating Teacher) has a new topic. She gives then a new activity about Triangle Inequality theorem. The students grouping. Teacher gives the questions and students have to answer by doing the activity first. A group given 3 measuring tape.

Teacher gives the problem.

Students do the activity.

Students do the activity.

Students do the activity.

At the end students have to conclude based on their activity. I watch them and sometimes help them when they ask for something about the activity.

As promises we plan to go to Chinatown. But until the time, the rain don’t stop fall since last night. So we change our plan. We are five, (Erwin, Ami, Vincent, Ivy and I) go to Santa Lucia Mall. It takes 30 minutes by taxi. We haven’t lunch yet, so we are looking for the restaurant that served halal food. And it happen again, we can’t find halal food here.

At Sta. Lucia Mall.
Vincent suggest us to move to SM Mall of Asia, we will find halal food there. I think it is far from here.

Nice view of that background.

SM Mall of Asia is known as the biggest mall in Philippines and also in Asia.
Mall of Asia (MoA) builds on the artificial land.
Across the Mall, there is a theme park, and it is appear before the sea. We take a boatride, and play the game there

Challenging game.
All of us play that game.
With buddies.

This Friday I don’t attend the class. Ma’am Dena want us to go to Roosevelt. We are going to Roosevelt to meet Professor. But unfortunately The Professor has classes. So we just meet principal of Roosevelt high school. We also take some photos there. We look round the campus.

At the front gate.

Roosevelt College Inc. in Cainta (here) is the Main Campus. RCI has 5 branches, there are in San Mateo, Marikina, Cubao, Rodriguez, and Cainta.

With principal of Roosevelt High School.

Actually Roosevelt’s students have their class at campus. So that we meet them at Roosevelt and take photos.

We (with new friends) are ready to go to our boarding house. But we go to public market first to buy somethings to cook.
They buy a big cake for celebrating a week in Philippines.

Chocolate cake.

Foods cooked by Chef Jade and Lynard.

Cheers for celebration.

Playing Uno Card.

The best welcoming party. Thank you so much for visiting our dorm. :)

Some sections do the project about congruence and triangles, same project that given to the last section last day. And others given a new activity about transversal. In learning, teacher explain using some of examples and do question and answer with students.
As I see the responds from each section are different. For example Acacia’s students more active to answer the questions than Pili’s students. The last 20-15 minutes Ma’am Essie give them problem about the topic. The problem’s given will be different for each section, depend on how’re students there.

Acacia's student.

Ma’am Essie look so busy today, so when I ask her for absent on Friday, I ask to help her. I bring the last student’s paperwork and I will record the score in house.
My CT have 4 kinds of assessment that can be record for the formative assessment, they are Quiz, Assignment, Activity and Recitation.

Because of we will not meet on Friday, Ma’am allowed me to start teach after Tuesday and change topic to be Probability.

Sea Teacher’s Day 5 (Observation Day 2)

Wednesday, January 24, 2018

I check the student’s assignment that they do last day and give them score. Ma'am Essie give me an example for scoring. So while I am observing, I check their papers.

Today Ma’am Essie give them new activity. The teacher make fun learning and students more active doing the project. In SEHS, they use student centered learning. So teacher only give the instruction or give just a little explanation.
The project is given like a game. I observed that students enjoy with their project. Even if they do by individual or work by group. They always ask the teacher if they don’t understand or just to confirm something.

At the last section, I give instruction to Molave because they have not yet to do activity about congruence. And guess what, when I stand up in front of the class, I am still nervous and feel blank for a while.

Ma’am Essie asks for me to start teaching next week and wants to check my lesson plan on Friday. The topic is about transversal, a part of Geometry. I say ok even if I am still doubt it. I think I can ask Vincent for help.

Sea Teacher’s Day 4 (Observation day 1)

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Two years ago, based on curriculum in Philippines, the students will be graduate from the high school after 4 years. But now after grade 10, they have two years more for Senior high school.
At present, Sta. Elena High School offers two Curriculum:
  1. The 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum (SEC) is offered to third year and fourth year High School Students.
  2. The K to 12 Curriculum which is offered to Grade 7 and Grade 8 Students.

Secondary Education Curriculum focuses on teaching and learning for understanding.
K to 12 Curriculum includes four years of Junior high school and two years senior high school, that provides sufficient time for mastery of concept and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

One year is separated by four quarter. At the end of the each quarter, they will have an examination. And when they are grade 10, before they enter senior high school, they are given The National Achievement Test. It is a national exam.

There are two special Programs in Sta. Elena High School:
  1. The Science and Technology Program (STP), knowing as “Engineering and Science Education Program (ESEP)”. The STP is a science and mathematics-oriented curriculum design to prepare the students to engineering and science related courses in tertiary education.
  2. The Special Program in the Arts (SPA) is designed to cater to the needs of students who are talented in Creative writing, Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts.

The students who have SEC curriculum, they learn Math subject 5 days in a week. For K to 12 curriculum they learn Math Subject only 4 days in a week. It takes 60 minutes for each meeting.
In learning Math, focuses on varied analysis of Mathematical problems which is based on real life situation.

For my case, I have to teach in the different sections, one section is a regular class, two sections are STP classes, and two others are SPA classes.

Regular class
In regular class, there are 60 students in a classroom. But in special program class (STP and SPA) there are 40 students in a classroom.

Special program class

After the class finish I ask to Ma'am Eisse how’s that? She says it is fine but I have to prepare for Molave tomorrow. So I can improve than today. And also she tells me to speak loudly.
I finish at 6.30 p.m. but I have to wait for Ami and Vincent. Because we have to back house together. It is so hard to get jeepney from SEHS, so we walk to another way. Actually we can use UV express or taxi, but jeepney is cheaper.
Untill 8.30 unfortunately it still hard to get our jeepney, but I really want to try it, so we take another jeepney and then take for tricycle to Ateneovillage.

Today my new friends suggest me to try to eat bilo-bilo for lunch. It has sweet taste and purple color. Very good and fully enough. It is like kolak in Indonesia. Bilo-bilo contains sweet potato, and it is 20 pesos only. And it can be find in Public Market, across of SEHS.

Bilo - bilo

They say that some seller sell halal food inside the public market, and it is recommended because the price here is cheaper than the grocery.

Sea Teacher’s Day 3 (In school’s teaching practicum)

January 22, 2018 0 Comments
Monday, January 22, 2018.

This day is the first day Ma’am Dena take us to our practicum school. I placed at public school, Sta. Elena High School with Ami. We go at 5.30 a.m. after we finished prayer. Actually at this time is so hard to get Jeepney (a public transportation). All of them is full by the passengers, so that Ma’am Dena back to her home and ask for her husband to deliver us. Ma’am Dena’s husband do it. They are very kind, I am very thankful for their kindness. We arrive at school at 6.30 a.m. and it is too late for us to be announce and introduce our self in front of students because they are ready to start the flag ceremony and we have to meet the principal first. So we just wait for him in the office until the ceremonial is finished.

Sta. Elena High School

Sta. Elena High School is situated along W. C. Paz st., in Brgy. Sta. Elena. It is a walking distance from the Marikina City Hall, the Marikina Public Market and Department of Education (Marikina). Sta. Elena High School is located in the heart of Marikina City.

At 8 o'clock we meet Dr. Jeffrey C. Trinidad (Principal of SEHS). He guide us to go around of school, he tells the name of buildings and what are they use for.

Sta. Elena High School
In the Library.
Sta. Elena High School (SEHS) has 39 academic classrooms for Junior High School and Senior high school, one TLE Laboratory, two computer Laboratories, one library, one clinic room, one guidance office, and one accounting office. SEHS also has 23 comfort rooms and one basketball court.

In Sta. Elena High School, there are two shifts in a day, first one is at the morning start from 6.30 a.m. and another one is afternoon shift start from 1 p.m. until 7.30 p.m. Because of our boarding house is far from the school, the principal suggest us to take the afternoon class. And we agree with that.

Then I meet the head, Mathematics teacher, Ma'am Lomibao. But I have to wait for her first. She will look for my schedule. After an hour waiting in principal office, Ami and I feel so bored. We think that we have to go outside. We meet Roosevelt’s students who do practicum teaching too. They are Mika and Jessa, from Math major, same as Vincent (my buddy). Actually there are many Roosevelt’s students in SEHS. They meet us to their friends. It is great to meet new friends in Philippines. They are very nice and friendly.

Ma’am Olive meet me to my cooperating teacher, Ms. Tessie Vecino and we call her Ma'am Eisse. I am observing her classes. She has 4 classes or section in a day. For a month I will take Ma’am Essie sections. Because of the previous student teacher is Marian, she know exactly how’s students in each sections. She kindly tell me everything.  And also Marian introduce me to the students. There are my sections: Pili, Acacia, Gemelina, Mahogany and Molave. They are grade 8.

Sea Teacher’s Day 2 (Completing things needed)

January 21, 2018 0 Comments
It is Sunday.
In morning Ma’am Dena comes and check us. We are not going anywhere today. We just clean up and put in order our things.
Ma’am Dena take us to grocery to buy things that we needed in boarding house. So lucky that we are nearby the grocery, 7eleven, laundry, restaurant, and easy to buy mineral water. But it is not easy to find halal food here. Ma’am tells us where probably we can get halal food.

Cause of a little accident last night, Vincent (my buddy) accompany us almost a whole day. He tells us some of rule that we don’t do and teach us some of simple expression in tagalog.

Some of greeting expression, such as say Mabuhai when you want to say hallo or hi in Philippines with put your right hand in your chest. It is also for respectful to people  who older than us.

Sea Teacher’s Day 1 (Jakarta to Manila)

January 20, 2018 0 Comments
Saturday, January 20 2018

The day that I have been waiting for is coming. I am so excited to join Sea Teacher’s program. My host university is Roosevelt College Inc. in Sumulong Highway, Cainta Rizal, Philippines.
I go to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport early morning. My Family accompanied me by car. We go from Cimahi at 00.00 a.m. to avoid traffic jam. So we arrive at 4 o’clock and then we pray Shubuh at the airport. We have many times before the flight schedule to Manila, so we walk around the Terminal 2 and take some photos.

family
At a half past eight I take leave to my family. I can’t hold to do-not-cry when I hug mom and dad. Cause it’s my first time to go abroad and also without my parents. They are advice me to take care of my self.
I wait for two friends other from UPI with Erwin (my partner in RCI).  But until 9.15 they still aren’t coming. So Erwin and I get check-in first. At eleven we are in waiting room.
At 11.30 a.m. the plane take-off. It will take for 4 hours from Jakarta to Manila. Because of all of us are in separated seat, I just spend time to sleep and do nothing while look at the window.
I like to see the sky from the window. The clouds look like a clump of cotton candy. The blue and white is the best combination color. I am so lucky to get seat besides the window.

The blue sky
We arrive at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) at 16.45 Philippines time. It is like we spend for five hours but isn’t. It’s just because Jakarta and Manila has different time, Manila is head one hour.
Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Actually Ma’am Jaja already to pick up us to Roosevelt College Inc. She doesn’t come alone. She comes with our buddies. (Buddies is friends that will accompany us during we do Sea-Teacher programs. Buddies can guide us, how to take the public transportation, where we can find something needed, teach us about Philippines, the people, and their culture.)
We are only three who receiving by RCI. Erwin and I from UPI and another one is Robiatul (Ami) from UNLAM. In RCI office we meet Ma’am Dena. She was the coordinator from RCI. She also the one who searching for the place that can use for us during this program. In the office Ma’am Dena serves us chicken and rice. She tells that are Halal food, and we can eat that. After eat we go to the address that we will be placed.
We got a house with 2 bedrooms, one bathroom, living room and dining room. We also can cook at the kitchen. This house in the Ateneoville  (around 100 houses of faculty and staff of Ateneo de Manila University), Nangka, Marikina City. She tells that it’s very secure here, and also nearby her home.
We just arrive at the house at 10 pm. It’s so dark and quiet. When we feel scared while we clear up the house, Ma’am Dena accompany us very well. She help us to put away the things that can be scared for us (some of the owner things in this house are scared). She is very kind and full of attention. We are so lucky to meet her. Like we have our mother in here. At 11.30 p.m. we are done for clear up the house. So we can go sleep then. I feel very tired –all of us are very tired cause by the long trip– so I went to bed first. My bed is in the same room with Ami.
I haven’t take a photo with Ma’am Dena or our buddies yet for this day. I still have 29 days here, right?

kuliah dan beasiswa (part I)

January 07, 2018 0 Comments
Teman-teman sedang kuliah? Atau akan kuliah?

Based on my experience nih, mahasiswa banyak banget yang aktif cari beasiswa sana-sini buat bantu biaya kuliahnya (aku termasuk kedalam golongan mahasiswa tersebut haha).
Kenapa coba?
That’s so amazing, right? Bayangin aja keren banget kan orang tua kita ngeluarin uang segitu gedenya buat sekolah kita? Itu baru kuliah S1 loh, selama SD SMP SMA gimana? 👀

Menurutku kebangetan sih kalau sampai kuliahmu ga bener, ya kan? ✌ hehe

Kebayang tuh ortuku double gitu bayar UKTnya. Disitu aku mikir. Gimana caranya biar aku ga jadi beban banget, dan ga ngabisin uang ortu buat kuliahku doang, karena aku tau adikku bentar lagi kuliah juga.

Teman-teman pernah denger Beasiswa PPA? Itu beasiswa yang seleksinya dilakukan oleh kampus. Oke semua orang tau, tapi aku tidak. Ya aku ga tau kapan pendaftarannya, tiba-tiba slot penuh. Hahaha.

Hm sepertinya aku tertipu. 😒

Hihi.

Masih semangat nih nyari beasiswa.

To be continued…

ordinary student.

math words

January 03, 2018 0 Comments
Aku beri judul "Words that are often found in Math".
And viola! That is very useful!

Selamat berkreasi :)

mathmedia - operasi pada bilangan bulat

January 02, 2018 0 Comments
Wah udah ganti tahun nih!
Apa aja resolusimu ditahun 2018?☝

Teman-teman, in my opinion mengajar bukan hal yang mudah. Mengajar perlu dipersiapkan.

For your information, alat peraga ini buatan Mahasiswa Pendidikan Matematika UPI 😊
Salah satu kegunaan alat ini, yaitu penjelasan tentang operasi bilangan bulat kami tampilkan dalam video berikut.
Check it out!

Selamat berkreasi :)

ordinary student.
